The Character Of Macbeth :: essays research papers
The character of Macbeth was a classic example of a tragic hero. Though many factors contributed to the degeneration of Macbeth, the one that stuck out most was his uncontrollable urge to attain and retain power. His over ambitious desire to acquire power was let loose by the witches, with their prophecies of Macbeth becoming the Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and King of Scotland. At first Macbeth replied that such foreshadowing couldn't be taken seriously, because of the evil forces that lay behind them. However, when Macbeth was declared Thane of Cawdor, almost immediately after the witches' prophecies, he had private thoughts and ambitions that he could become King of Scotland. In an instant the witches had let loose Macbeth's over ambitious nature for imperial power. (An aside in I.iii.127-130 is a perfect example) Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Now that Macbeth's uncontrollable desire to become king had surfaced, he became solely focused on obtaining this goal. This included the murder of King Duncan. Lady Macbeth, wanting to be queen of Scotland, provided her husband with a plan to assassinate King Duncan. At first Macbeth hesitated to murder Duncan. He was afraid of the aftereffects and didn't deem it right to kill a king who was just and of such high stature. Unfortunately for Duncan, Macbeth's ambitions slowly overpowered his morals and loyalty. Even though Macbeth was uncertain, his ambition for power was able to take over his mind, and provided him with a sufficient excuse to murder King Duncan. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Macbeth had now achieved his goal, being the King of Scotland. His urges should have diminished, but they didn't. Macbeth was now dead set on retaining his new power. He became paranoid and feared Banquo, whose integrity and loyalty could allow him to avenge Duncan's death. Even though Banquo thought it was quite odd that Macbeth quickly acquired the titles the witches hailed him, he did not think Macbeth was capable of murdering Duncan. However, what really was bothering Macbeth was Banquo's sons were prophesied to inherit the throne. Macbeth would do whatever he could to prevent anyone, even after his death, from taking the throne. Macbeth wasn't just satisfied with being king; he wanted to have his descendants share the title as well. Acting on these passions, Macbeth hired two assassins and tried to kill Banquo and his son Fleance. Even though Fleance escaped, the murder of Banquo calmed Macbeth's nerves because he was safe from being charged with the murder o f King Duncan.

Moral Truth
Moral Truth What is Moral truth? In Sam Harrisââ¬â¢ book ââ¬Å"The Moral Landscapeâ⬠, he explains his ideas on moral truth. He explains that moral truth is so complex because of personal whim, and cultural influence. He explains his ideas of moral truth through science, objective and subjective, and consensus and consciousness. With these ideas Harris is able to define moral truth to his best ability, because it is such a difficult subject to understand. In the chapter on moral truth, Harris explains moral truth with the use of science. He states in the book ââ¬Å"science can, in Principe, help us understand what we should do, and should want-and, therefore, what other people should do and want in order to live the best lives possible. ââ¬Å"In other words, He believes that like science, there are right and wrong answers to moral truth. He then explains that science should help us answer moral questions. His other idea is that science is based on our best guess of what it i s and moral truth is the same. Moral truth is also just our best guess of what is right and wrong.Harris is trying to say that moral truth, like science, can have a framework in which we believe is correct, but can always change. Harris explains in the book that the terms ââ¬Å"objectiveâ⬠and ââ¬Å"subjectiveâ⬠are very different. Objective means that a person is using to bias when they are making a statement. He uses the example of having a ringing in his ear. This is a subjective statement, however, is objective because he is not lying. From this idea of the ringing in the ear, he explains that this is a way that we can study depression. We can determine brain states with reference, to personââ¬â¢s subjective thoughts. Finally in the chapter, he explores the ideas of consensus and consciousness. He explains that scientific consensus as scientific controversy that work needs to be done. For example, ââ¬Å"moral controversy proves that there can be no such thing as m oral truth while moral consensus shows only that human beings often harbor the same biasesâ⬠this idea is basically saying that often people will think differently than others and this creates bias among people.Harris explains that truth has nothing to do with moral consensus, because often one person can be right, while a crowd is wrong. Harris then goes on to explain his ideas on consciousness. He explains that people have moral truth because they are conscious creatures. His understanding of a conscious being is that ââ¬Å"consciousness is only intelligible domain of value. â⬠All in all, Harris believes that moral truth is similar to science because it must be backed up by evidence and often consists of educated guesses. He explains that objective and subjective are very different, however; can often be used in the same ways. Finally, consensus and consciousness outline the basis of moral truth, because without them moral truth would not exist according to Harris. He b elieves that consensus means that only humans can have the same bias, and consciousness shows that only people with consciousness can have moral truth.

Life Is a Journey Speech Essay
Sometime you can just feel a personââ¬â¢s spirit around you. In many ways, we can see that the death of something does often leave some kind of impact, and as a result of this impact something about us inevitably changes. Iââ¬â¢m sure weââ¬â¢ve all had to deal with a close relative or a friend passing away, and itââ¬â¢s not the easiest thing, but thereââ¬â¢s so much to learn from it. Iââ¬â¢ve never really had a reason to until my good friend Dominique passed away earlier last year. Its nuts that one-day weââ¬â¢re all sitting together sharing a few laughs, and the next day a member of our group is no longer with us. Dominique was one of the smartest and most compassionate people I knew. Heââ¬â¢d always make sure others were comfortable and never put himself before others. And thatââ¬â¢s part of the reason why his death affected me so much; itââ¬â¢s saddening to know that a person that has done so much good can pass away at such a young age. Granted it is saddening, we can only learn from the good he has accomplished. It was hard seeing someone go that moved through life with you like water (simile). But I learned a lot from it. About embracing moments. About taking chances. About never giving up. About gratitude. About me (alliteration). Life is a journey (metaphor). And I never really understood what that meant until Dominique passed. As an active member of his community and a student at University of Maryland, Dominique always had something to offer to others. He always counted his blessings and paid it forward. Which continually blew my mind; why is someone so young worried about giving back to others when he has so much life left to live? Especially after Dominiqueââ¬â¢s death, Iââ¬â¢ve realized that we can go so unexpectedly. When most people hear this, they think of all of the things that they have not done yet, the places they want to go, the crazy stories they want to tell, but because of my friend Dominique, I am able to see there are far more important things to live your life by; like establishing good character, and having the ability to be selfless. Iââ¬â¢m not saying this is easy, but it is something I believe everyone should strive for in life. We all go through struggles on a daily basis but should we give up or continue to bite our teeth and fight on. Every setback happens for a reason, and this is the best time to learn from our mistakes, correct them, and hopefully not make the same mistakes in the future. Learn something new and strengthen yourself. My favorite quality of Dominiqueââ¬â¢s was that he never expected, demanded, or assumed anything. He always gave people the benefit of the doubt, did his best, and controlled the elements that he could control. Weââ¬â¢ve all heard the quote; ââ¬Å"Things that donââ¬â¢t kill you will only make you stronger.â⬠After every setback, bounce back and become stronger. He always fought like the courageous man he was (simile). We often donââ¬â¢t realize that our attitude determines our unhappiness or misery. He always taught me to become determined to stay positive. Circumstances will direct you, correct you, and perfect you over time; so whatever you do, hold on to hope. The last thing Dominique really opened my eyes to was that he was never afraid to get out of his comfort zone. He was never shy and always put himself out there. Sometimes, when you are too comfortable in your journey to success, you will not improve, and tend to become okay with where you stand. Dominique was a great example of someone who kept moving forward and wasnââ¬â¢t afraid of what he may run into. Weââ¬â¢ve all taken the first step of getting out our comfort zone by signing up for SP CM 212. But we must keep in mind that itââ¬â¢s a work in progress and that nothing comes easy. Dom always tried to persuade me into doing something I wouldnââ¬â¢t normally do and to give everything a chance. Thanks to him we were able to share a few memories by going on multiple trips together. By following the same old routine we begin to bore those around us and even ourselves. I guess I never really understood why it was such a big deal that every minute lost was never coming back to us. Your minutes are the only thing on this earth that thereââ¬â¢s a limited amount of. We tend to take death pretty hard and question why they had to go at such a young age. But maybe weââ¬â¢re doing it all wrong and should be remembering the great things that person accomplished and what they left us with. If youââ¬â¢re looking for a happy ending and canââ¬â¢t seem to find one, maybe itââ¬â¢s time to remember the great things. When I look back at my life I can see how perfect all has been for me to be right where I am today. And Iââ¬â¢m sure that goes to for many of us here. Life is a mystery unfolding every moment! (metaphor). Some of the strongest people out there are the ones who laugh the hardest with a genuine smile and have gone through the hardest of hardships.

Son of the Revolution Essay
Peter Kim HIST 354 McKenzie April 2013 Son of the Revolution Essay Right at the start of the memoir, Son of the Revolution, the readerââ¬â¢s attention is drawn to the strict nature of the daycare center the narrator is in. We find that Chinaââ¬â¢s motion towards a Socialist party is integrated down to the peopleââ¬â¢s level, even implemented and enforced in the daycares. This seems extreme to the reader, especially when the songs sung by the children are titled, ââ¬Å"Sweeping the Floorâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Working the Factoryâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Planting Trees in the Countrysideâ⬠.One doesnââ¬â¢t need much context clues to figure out what these songs are about. Consequently, this level of extreme integration has caused Chinese society to value family as second-priority to this pursuit of Socialist. However, in this setting where the family isnââ¬â¢t that well off, we learn that Heng and his siblings were spoiled by their paternal and maternal grandmothers. In regards to Mao Zedong, the people of China are led to believe that Mao was in some sort of a deity, a god that affected everyoneââ¬â¢s lives.Simultaneously, he was considered as a national father of everyone in Communist China. The author demonstrates this when recalling the sweet of relief he felt when he heard ââ¬Å"that Chairman Mao had forgivenâ⬠him, and through writing exercises that required them to repeatedly practice writing, ââ¬Å"Chairman Mao is our Great Saving Star,â⬠and ââ¬Å"We are all Chairman Maoââ¬â¢s good little children. â⬠To many outside nations, including Americans, this seems like a way of brainwashing the people, especially at such an early age. However, we already know that the leaders of the Communist Party have no such fatherly intentions for their ââ¬Å"childrenâ⬠. The ââ¬Å"Hundred Flowers Movement,â⬠a movement that encouraged Chinaââ¬â¢s peoples to openly express their voices and opinions, turns out to be a trap set to ide ntify any Rightists in the midst of people. Trying to be helpful, Hengââ¬â¢s mother is accused of being a Rightist and is sent to a labor camp to ââ¬Å"reformâ⬠her. We observe this clash of traditional Confucian value in family with the political allegiance to the Communist movement in Hengââ¬â¢s father, even to the oint where he denounces his own wife. The loyalty to Chinaââ¬â¢s communist Party over family runs deep within its people. Upon hearing that their own father is accused of being a Capitalist and anti-Party, Liang Heng and his siblings become enraged at their own father; in other words, the children honored the communist Party more than they honored their own father, which is ironic to Liang Shang, since he abandoned his wife for the Party. In addition to the Hundred Flowers Movement, Liang Hengââ¬â¢s life took another major turn of events with the initiation of ââ¬Å"The Great Leap Forward,â⬠Mao Zedongââ¬â¢s attempt to transform China from an a grarian economy into a more modernized Communist society via rapid industrialization and collective farming. Naturally, private farming would become prohibited and even accused as an act of rebellion against the revolution. However, the Great Leap Forward was a massive failure with millions of people dying from starvation. Liang Hengââ¬â¢s family was no exception, and had to accommodate for these times. The majority of this narrative takes place during the Cultural Revolution, movement that resulted from the failure of the Great Leap Forward. The main goal of the Revolution was to shift ââ¬Å"old,â⬠traditional, Capitalist China into the ââ¬Å"new,â⬠communist China to secure Mao Zedongââ¬â¢s position in power. Like his other previous endeavors, we see that the Cultural Revolution brought with it confusion and chaos to the people, particularly having to do with the change in names of everything around them from roads to stores to public parks. Liangââ¬â¢s friends have even abandoned their old names to adopt newer ââ¬Å"revolutionaryâ⬠names.Still, holding such high regards to their Chairman Mao and failing to see flaws in his methods, our narrator strives to one day carry his own Red Guard uniform, specifically upon seeing his older sister wearing her own uniform. Ironically, his own home is later raided by these Red Guards because of his familyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"politicalâ⬠history ââ¬â his motherââ¬â¢s relatives have moved to Taiwan, she herself is branded as a Rightist, his father is a writer, or ââ¬Å"stinking intellectual. â⬠These circumstances make it difficult for Liang Heng socially, and he is constantly persecuted and ridiculed by the rest of society because of it.

My Crush Essay
My crush is the reason of my unexplainable emotions. Every time I see him I just canââ¬â¢t explain my feelings, because sometimes I feel happy, excited, mad and sad. Happy every time Iââ¬â¢m with him and when he mingled with my family in our house. I get excited because he gave surprises to me. Mad when he ignores me especially when he is busy texting while we are still chatting. And lastly, sad because I know he is already committed to someone. On the other hand, he became a big part of my life. Because he always inspires me to do the best that I could do. But he is not merely my crush. He is also my mother, father, brother and best friend. Mother in the sense that he always takes care of me and reminds me to do the things I need to do. He could also be my father in a way that he scolds me every time I make a wrong decision. Brother for the reason that we fight for every small details and make argument with each other. And lastly, my best friend who was always been there for me, and never left me in my upââ¬â¢s and downââ¬â¢s. Every person has a crush; they said that itââ¬â¢s normal to have a feeling towards opposite sex. But more than that, our crushes could be an inspiration to us, in doing the things that sometimes hard for us to do. My crush would always be one of my inspirations in my life.

Dangerous and Natural Energy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Dangerous and Natural Energy - Essay Example The states located on the Western parts, especially be the sea are high risk areas. California, Nevada, and Washington are the highest risk states. The farther East an individual goes in the United States, with the exception of the red area on the Tennessee border, the less likely of an earthquake occurrence. Texas, Florida, Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin and Michigan have the lowest chance of having a major earthquake in the next fifty years. The earthquakes around the world on http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/ show a pattern of earthquakes near coastlines or on islands for the past seven days. Interestingly enough the red area just inside of the Tennessee border had a 2.8 earthquake within the past week. My decision to live in Tennessee has nothing to do with the chance of an earthquake, so I would be willing to live in a red zone for the right reason such as a job, new relationship, or whim. Every area on the earth has natural disasters. An individual cannot escape the threat of a natural disaster. If I had to live in one of the red areas on the map, I would educate myself on everything earthquake. I would look at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learning/faq.php?categoryID=14 to find earthquake facts. This is the USGS website on earthquake safety. The first step would have necessary supplies on hand. The USGS recommends to have the following supplies: According to http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/world/most_destructive.php two of the most recent earthquakes were in Shaanxi and Pakistan. The earthquake in Shaanxi ranked 8 on the Richter scale. The earthquake in Pakistan ranked a 7.6. The power of science to control or predict earthquakes is weak. Scientists can predict and measure an earthquake, but since they can happen anytime during various times scientists have no real power over earthquakes.
